Medicinal Chemistry is a highly flexible degree programme covering a wide range of courses taught by chemists, biologists and medicinal chemists. It provides a strong foundation in core chemistry, supplemented by specialist knowledge of medicinal chemistry. In addition to core chemistry units you take specialist courses such as medicinal chemistry and a number of courses on drug design and development from experts within the field. A degree in Medicinal Chemistry is ideal preparation for a career in scientific research but also provides broad training in transferable skills, analytical thinking and problem solving broadly coveted by professional industries.
My enthusiasm for this programme is driven by the nature of my own research career. I studied for a PhD in organic chemistry and then worked as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. During this time I led a number of high profile research programmes targeting the generation of central nervous system based therapies leading to the generation of candidates for clinical trials for the treatment of pain and anxiety. I’m extremely passionate about the process of drug discovery and the science of medicinal chemistry. I am now based in the School of Chemistry and bring my expertise of working in the pharmaceutical industry to both my teaching and research career at the University. I’m actively involving in teaching on the medicinal chemistry programme and also highly engaged in research towards the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of conditions of unmet medical need, particular in the cancer and cardiovascular fields. I collaborate widely for my research and work with scientists across a number of Faculties (biological sciences, engineering and medicine) at the University.
