Flexible degrees

Students in the School of Mathematics

Our mathematics degrees have a flexible structure. You have the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad or undertaking an industrial placement and some of our courses give you option of studying for an Integrated Masters.

MMath or BSc?

We offer MMath and BSc options for our Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics courses. An MMath, BSc is a four-year Integrated Masters degree that extends your studies to Masters level.

It is possible to switch between the BSc and MMath versions of a course during the first two years of your degree.

Benefits of an Integrated Masters

There are many benefits if you opt to study for an Integrated Masters degree:

  • Greater breadth and depth of study: you’ll have the opportunity to be involved in a wider range of project work and study topics to a deeper level
  • Advanced knowledge: you’ll develop a good basis for a PhD or career that utilises advanced mathematical techniques

Switching between courses

We allow you to switch between some of our courses during your degree. You can switch between the BSc or MMath versions of a course up until the end of your second year, provided you are meeting the required academic standards. It is possible to switch between our Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics degrees up until the end of your first year.

Our BSc Actuarial Mathematics and BSc Mathematics with Finance degrees share a common first year, allowing you to move from one programme to the other up until the end of your first year.

You can move from one of our Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics programmes to our BSc Mathematical Studies programme up until the end of your first year.

Industrial placement years

All of our courses allow you to undertake a placement year as part of your degree. An industrial placement extends the length of your degree by a year. This means the length of a BSc degree increases to 4 years while the length of an MMath degree increases to 5 years. You have until the beginning of your second year to decide whether or not you would like to do a year in industry.

Study abroad

All of our degrees give you the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad. On our BSc degrees, your year abroad extends the length of your degree to 4 years. On our MMath degrees, your study abroad year is an integrated year of your degree, meaning the length of your programme remains at 4 years. You have up until the beginning of your second year to decide whether or not you would like to do a year abroad.

Discovery modules

Many of our courses allow you to study discovery modules. Discovery modules give you the opportunity to broaden your studies beyond your core discipline and pursue your personal interests. Discovery modules are organised into 10 themes, representing the breadth of the University’s teaching from arts to sciences. If you prefer, the credits available to you for discovery modules can be taken as additional optional modules.
