Physics addresses how the world works on every scale, from the minutest subatomic particles to the structure and evolution of the Universe. Studying physics develops the skills you need to creatively solve problems in any sphere, which is why opportunities for physics graduates exist across a wide range of industries.

We also contribute to the interdisciplinary Natural Sciences MNatSc, BSc programme.

Our reputation

We have an established reputation for delivering high-quality research and teaching. Over 90% of our research activity was rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ by the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 and we are top 5 nationally for research impact.

Research-based degrees

We have an active research environment which enables us to offer exciting courses taught by experts who are leaders in their fields. You’ll be directly engaged in research through individual and team-based project work – giving you access to our specialist facilities and allowing you to work with one of our internationally-recognised research groups.

Flexible degrees

All of our single honours courses can be studied as a BSc or MPhys degree and give you the option of studying abroad for a year or undertaking an industrial placement. It is possible to switch between our Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics courses up until the end of your first year.

Industry-relevant courses

Our Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics degrees are accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP). This means the topics you’ll study reflect the latest developments in physics and will give you the skills you’ll need to succeed in industry upon graduation. Our Industrial Advisory Committee helps ensure our courses are up-to-date with modern practices and techniques.

Hands-on learning

Laboratory classes and project work allow you to gain hands-on experience, investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real-life work situations. Opportunities such as our summer research placements and group industrial project module give you experience of working in a world-class research group or for a major industrial client.

Rewarding careers

Over 88% of our recent graduates have successfully secured employment or gone on to further study within six months of graduating (latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey). Recent graduate destinations include IBM, KPMG and Atkins.
