Flexible degrees

Students in the physics coffee bar

Our Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics degrees have a flexible structure. You have the option of studying for a BSc or MPhys degree and the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad or undertaking an industrial placement.

All of our courses cover core physics and mathematics topics through compulsory modules. You’ll be able to tailor your programme to your own interests and career plans through optional modules at every stage of the course.

MPhys or BSc?

We offer both BSc and MPhys, BSc undergraduate degree programmes. An MPhys, BSc is a four-year Integrated Masters degree that extends your studies to Masters level.

It is possible to switch between the BSc and MPhys versions of a course during the first two years of your degree.

Benefits of an Integrated Masters

There are many benefits if you opt to study for an Integrated Masters degree:

  • Greater breadth and depth of study: you’ll have the opportunity to be involved in a wider range of project work and study more advanced topics in physics.
  • Chartered Physicist status: studying for an accredited MPhys degree meets the educational requirements for Chartered Physicist status.
  • Advanced knowledge: you’ll develop a good basis for a PhD or career in physics-based research.
  • Higher salaries: according to the Institute of Physics, MPhys graduates typically command higher starting salaries than BSc graduates.

Switching between courses

It is possible to switch between our Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics courses up until the end of your first year.

Industrial placement years

All of our courses allow you to undertake a placement year as part of your degree. An industrial placement extends the length of your degree by a year. This means the length of a BSc degree increases to 4 years while the length of an MPhys degree increases to 5 years. You can decide up until the beginning of your second year whether or not you would like to do a year in industry.

Study abroad

All of our degrees give you the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad. On our BSc degrees, your year abroad takes the length of your degree to 4 years. On our MPhys degrees, your study abroad year is an integrated year of your degree, meaning the length of your programme remains at 4 years. You have up until the beginning of your second year to decide whether or not you would like to do a year abroad.

Discovery modules

All of our courses allow you to study discovery modules. Discovery modules give you the opportunity to broaden your studies beyond your core discipline and pursue your personal interests. Discovery modules are organised into 10 themes, representing the breadth of the University’s teaching from arts to sciences. If you prefer, the credits available to you for discovery modules can be taken as additional optional modules.
