Undergraduate degrees

Chemistry is the central science, with links to biology, physics, mathematics, and engineering. Chemists design and synthesise medicines, investigate climate change and energy, create our everyday products, and develop new materials. With a chemistry degree you’ll be able to work in a diverse range of industries.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 rated 95% of our work as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

Research-based degrees

We have an active research environment which enables us to offer exciting courses taught by experts who are leaders in their fields. You’ll be directly engaged in research through individual and team-based project work – giving you access to our specialist facilities. You’ll perform synthetic and analytical chemistry in our industry-standard Joseph Priestley laboratory and use our Porter laboratory for your physical chemistry work.

Flexible degrees

All our courses can be studied as BSc or MChem degrees and give you the option of studying abroad for a year or undertaking an industrial placement. Our Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry degrees share a common first year, allowing you the freedom to switch courses up until you start your second year.

Online courses

We offer two short, free online courses developed by our leading academics that can give you a taste of what it's like to study with us. No previous knowledge of chemistry is required - an enquiring mind is all you need.

Industry-relevant courses

Our Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry degrees are accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. This means the topics you’ll study reflect the latest developments in chemistry and will give you the skills you’ll need to succeed in industry upon graduation. Our Industrial Advisory Committee helps ensure our courses are up-to-date with modern practices and techniques.

Exceptional student support

You’ll be guided through your course by your personal tutor, who’ll provide academic and pastoral support. Our Student Support team is based within our School and helps with anything from academic advice to timetabling and project submission enquiries.

New undergraduate students receive a welcome package when they start, which includes textbooks, laboratory notebooks, a laboratory coat, safety spectacles and laboratory manuals.

Rewarding careers

96% of our recent graduates have successfully secured employment or gone on to further study within six months of graduating (latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2016/17). Recent graduate destinations include Covance, GlaxoSmithKline and AkzoNobel.

My favourite part of chemistry at the moment is Quantum Mechanics. The fundamental intricacies of the natural world have led to so many great discoveries, but it is the principles behind the applications that I find most fascinating.
