The UK’s ageing demographic brings social and economic challenges, particularly related to the healthcare of the growing older population. Research gaps have been identified in ‘active and healthy ageing’, and nutrition has been highlighted as critical in its contribution to older adults’ health and wellbeing.
Physiological, psychosocial, and economic changes that may accompany ageing, can influence food choice and act as barriers to a healthy diet in later life. Given the role of nutrition in healthy ageing and the growing older population, this PhD looks to better understand the food choice and dietary intake of older adults (living independently in the community).
Using a mixed methods approach, the work will look to inform effective strategies to improve diet and nutrition in later life. Existing national datasets will be used to investigate older adults’ dietary intake and food choice behaviour. Qualitative data will be collected and analysed to explore older adults’ perceptions, perspectives and practices relating to their food choice and dietary behaviour.
Applications are invited from candidates with or expecting a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1), and/or a Master's degree in a relevant science subject such as nutrition, dietetics, psychology or another related discipline with a keen interest in nutrition and applying mixed methods in interdisciplinary research.
Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills. Experience in quantitative data analysis would be advantageous although this is not essential. If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the University's minimum English Language requirements.
