In many astrophysical and geophysical situations of interest, turbulent interactions take place within a thin layer of stably stratified fluid in the presence of a magnetic field. Examples of such situations may include the outer layers of exoplanets or the interiors of stars - for example the solar tachocline.
Such dynamics may be modelled using the thin-shell MHD equations where a reduced model system is derived asymptotically. The properties of these equations has only recently begun to be investigated. This project is to derive basic properties of waves, instabilities and turbulence in such a system and compare with more complicated models. This research is to be carried out in the Astrophysical and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics research group, which is one of the largest such research groups in the world
Applicants should have or expect to obtain, a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree in Mathematics or a related discipline, or equivalent.
If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the University's minimum English Language requirements.
