Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?

As an International student from Indonesia, when it was time for me to choose a university based on my preferred course the University of Leeds, School of Food Science was one of the first ones I looked at. Although I was already sold by what the internet showed me, I decided to talk to someone who had graduated from the university and told me a lot about the Leeds life, after which I confirmed my decision.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?

I absolutely love my course, especially because along with all the science, we also look at food from a business point of view with modules that talk about product development and quality control. 

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?

Recently for our food analysis module as a group, we had to prove the nutritional label of a complex food. The food that we chose was a ham and cheese sandwich and we would be in the lab for hours every week performing different experiments to measure different components like fat, sugar, minerals, etc. and then compare our values to the values that were given to us on the back of the sandwich box. This was by far the most interesting projects that I have done as the results were a shocker. 

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Leeds is a great city overall. It's got the hustle and bustle of a big city but also the serenity of a suburban town. Most things are affordable and the panoramic views breath-taking. There is always something to do and something going on. People are extremely friendly and because there are so many international students I have never felt like an outcast.

What are your ambitions for the future?

In the near future, I would definitely aim to work in an FMCG company as I am very interested in business and marketing food products now that I have the knowledge about them.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

Being in Leeds has taught made me a more confident person especially because the School of Food Science is so encouraging. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and joined societies and applied for school-related leadership roles that I would never have imagined myself doing before.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

The course is really science and math based but don't let that freak you out because if you take it slow and go through everything properly you will be able to understand. Also, everyone here is really helpful if you ever need anything. Make sure to voice out your doubts and seek help whenever you are not sure and make use of all the facilities that the school provides you with. Other than that, come with an open mind and make the most of your 3 years.
