Why did you choose the University of Leeds?

A mixture of my course at Leeds having one of the best reputations in the country, and the campus having such a great vibe in comparison to other universities I visited on open days.

The location of the campus to the city, and the option to do a study abroad year as part of my degree were also key factors in my decision to study at Leeds.

Why did you choose to study this particular degree?

I chose to study nutrition because it combines my interests in both food and health. I also like the diversity of the subject and the fact there's job opportunities for Nutrition graduates in a variety of different food-related areas.

What do you like most about your course?

I like how varied our modules are, from public health nutrition, to sensory and nutritional properties of food. I also like the practical aspect - some modules include lab-based learning.

The school of Food Science and Nutrition at Leeds also has its own building which creates a nice community feel.

What skills have you gained from your course so far?

Practical skills from lab projects and lab based modules, analytical skills from writing a literature review on scientific papers, team-working skills from working as groups during product development classes.

Can you describe what student life at Leeds is like (perhaps a typical day)?

Life at Leeds is different every day, from lab work to lectures and group projects.

The more extra-curricular activities you get involved in the more varied your student life will be, from sports societies to volunteering opportunities.

There are also plenty of libraries to work in around campus and cafes and comfy corners to chill with your friends. 

What were you most worried about before arriving at university?

I was definitely worried about making friends, and not liking the people I lived in halls with. It was definitely not to worry about – I still live with some of my flatmates from first year now and they will be friends for life!

What do you like most about being a student so far/what has been your best experience?

Making loads of new friends and becoming independent, being able to take responsibility for myself and my own choices.

My best experience so far was spending a year of my degree studying abroad in Melbourne, Australia. 

Is there is anything which particularly surprised you about being a student?

How easy adapting to moving away from home and settling into life in a different city was.

What do you plan to do at the end of your course?

Graduate and find a job working as a nutritionist either in the food industry or public health. However, I still haven’t ruled the possibility of continuing my studies and converting to dietetics. 

What do you do outside of your studies?

I am part of the hiking society, the food society and Erasmus and International Exchange Society. I am also involved in volunteering with the Real Junk Food Project and HOMED (university charity for homeless people).

In previous years I have been a member of Leeds RAG and taken part in events such as the Three Peaks Challenge. 

Are there any other comments that you would like to make about being a student at the University of Leeds?

I have visited many universities and even studied at university in Australia for a year, and I can tell you nowhere else comes close to the campus vibe and student network of Leeds.

It’s an extremely friendly and welcoming university with such a diverse range of students, and also in such a great location.

The city is also really vibrant and great for shopping!
