Kate Bennett studied BSc Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds

Kate Bennett

Why did you choose the University of Leeds?

It was ranked highly in league tables for my course and I fell in love with the campus and University when I visited on an Open Day. I am also from the North East so Leeds isn’t too far from home.

Why did you choose to study Food Science & Nutrition?

I have always loved food so I thought it would be interesting to learn the science and nutrition behind it. I also knew there were a lot of job prospects in the food industry.

What do you like most about your course?

I love the nutrition side of things as I find it fascinating. My favourite module in second year was called energy metabolism and obesity. However, there is still good mix with the food science modules.

What skills have you gained from your course so far?

I have developed my lab skills over the years by using unfamiliar equipment. My team work skills have also improved and I am definitely more confident writing and sourcing academic material.

Can you describe what student life at Leeds is like (perhaps a typical day)?

To start off the day, I will usually go to the gym here on campus - The Edge - as the facilities are amazing.

I will then attend whatever lectures I have that day and do some lab work in the analytical lab or food lab if needed.

I will try to meet up with friends as well and we love grabbing a bite to eat at The Terrace in the Students' Union.

I will then go home and sort out all my work and notes for the day before settling down to watch Netflix or preparing for a night out (probably a night at Fruity in the Students' Union)

What were you most worried about before arriving at university?

I was worried that I wouldn’t make any friends but those worries were quickly dismissed when I attended society socials and got to meet my flatmates from my halls of residence.

What do you like most about being a student so far/what has been your best experience?

The student discount and student nights out. My best experience by far was living in university halls and seeing friends every day and mixing with lots of different people.

I have also just returned from a year placement in industry which was really beneficial.

Is there is anything which particularly surprised you about being a student?

The amount of responsibility you get given in certain modules, there is definitely no spoon feeding at university.

What do you plan to do at the end of your course?

I'd like to get onto a graduate scheme.

What do you do outside of your studies?

I attend the gym a lot or the exercise classes at The Edge. I also love visiting different cities in the UK and going to art galleries or museums.

Are there any other comments that you would like to make about being a student at the University of Leeds?

Being a student at Leeds will be the best years of your life. The city and the culture and the people are amazing.

And the academic staff here genuinely care about your wellbeing and your  learning.
